2012 Grizzly Ryder Trail Run

Grizzly Ryder Trail Run – April 28, 2012

Bears in Woodside?!?! Well… not anymore. But during the Gold Rush bears thrived in the tall redwoods throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains and right here in Huddart Park. During the 1840′s, Woodside was a major hub of activity for the logging industry. Men and saws ran rampant through the forests cutting down everything in sight and making a fortune selling the prized lumber to builders in San Francisco.

Legend has it that one day while out looking for some missing cattle, a logger, who became known as “Grizzly Ryder,” came across a mother bear and her cubs. Before Ryder could react, the big bear had the man tied up in its grip but he still managed to reach his knife. One good poke convinced the ferocious bear to let him go and Ryder escaped with his life . . . but without one of his ears!

Sadly, Grizzly Ryder and the bears left these woodlands a long time ago. However, by participating in the Inaugural Grizzly Ryder Trail Run, you can still imagine what it might have been like during those times. This course takes you along creeks, through dense redwood forests, and across soft and well-shaded trails. Bear-free, the run begins with a challenging uphill climb followed by flat and rolling trails and finishes with a gradual coast downhill.

Register today and join us for either the 10k, 17k, or 35k run. As mentioned, the first hill is a doozy, but it gets easier after that and you’ll really enjoy the downhill to the finish. If you don’t want to run, just walk or hike the course as the scenery is magnificent and the air is fresh.

All routes will be clearly marked and there will be water stations on the course.
